Paris: a VERY brief summary
"Street Art" on the Tate Modern
The Tate has once again expanded its art presence in the world by commissioning 15 large scale street art works for the exterior of the epic former power station on the Southbank of London. They are currently on view and will continue to be until summer’s end. The Evening Standard notes the absence of Banksy in the exhibtion (which is obviously free and open to the public 24 hours a day);...
Berlin Philharmonic Escapes Severe Damage via... →
I nearly had a heart attack the other day when I heard the Berlin Phil could have sustained severe (and irreversible?) damage to the concert hall. A fire broke out and early reports seemed to think that the hall’s famed acoustic could have been ruined. Good news - slight water damage and that’s it.

– The New Cold War - New York Times This is the opening line of Thomas L. Friedman’s most recent column. It not be something I love, but it is a reality we need to embrace and resolve. Do we talk with Iran or not? Do we pretend that this issue isn’t as big as it is? Do we continue to...

Ephemeral Art & David Byrne
David Byrne’s temporary sound/art installation will use the Great Hall fo the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan as the instrument for his work. By attaching devices to architectural & structural features throughout the building (which just finished a large scale restoration in 2006) - he’ll “make the building sing”. The sounds will be controlled by an organ...

I hope the new mayor of London doesn’t mess with the Fourth Plinth project in Trafalgar Square. I absolutely adore it.

Architects' Home and Office is Less Than Eight... →
I officially love small-scale and simple design solutions that result in unique homes. This reminds me of the Alexandria apartment I tumbled about the other month, as well as the use of storage containers for office space in Berlin. YES!

This could either turn out to be absolutely brilliant or a hodge podge of architectural design - either way, I have to say I’m really excited to see what happens. Very excited because local firm, Uni, is building one of the 100 homes. More here.
The Stage / News / Home Office announces end to... →
This is a great move by the Home Office (UK) to encourage and facilitate international talent to perform in the UK. Difficult and bureaucratic means of procuring visas for short visits often cause undue stress (both financial & emotional) on presenting organizations - therefore discouraging them from tapping into the international scene of any given art. This is a great first step in ensuring...
Six decades on, who needs the ICA? - Times Online →
Richard Morrison waxes nostalgic about the ICA (London). The ICA celebrates 60 years of controversy (and Morrison contends lack thereof recently). I interned in the education department for a semester here while studying in London and didn’t have a clear idea at the time of what role it had played in contemporary art. Now it’s much clearer to me and I’m wondering what the role of...

Thank god I read the NYTimes with a passion - I didn’t have any clue that Richard Serra had a large scale installation @ La Nef du Grand Palais in Paris starting today and running through June 15. Steven Erlanger covers not only Serra’s work “Promenade” but also contextualizes it within the French Culture Ministry’s work with the massive Grand Palais space in a...

Chinati Foundation symposium this weekend on the Writings of Donald Judd - definitely a must listen event. I’m not extremely well read on Don Judd’s writing, but I distinctly remember being drawn in by an acceptance speech he gave for an award in the 70s (I think) which I read in Art in Theory (everyone’s favorite art theory text in college). More on this soon….

The title of this article doesn’t actually broach the (underlying?) topic that I found most compelling within; how to balance development and growth with protection of traditions and historical/present identity. In addition, much of the development is being designed by foreign architects, what commitment does the Chinese government have to elevating domestic talent? With big firms like OMA,...

Unreal - we should all dream to have a job like Brad Grossman had. zachklein: Met Brad Grossman this morning (profiled in above New Yorker piece) who up until three weeks ago was Brian Grazer’s cultural attaché, a job concept that he and Grazer apparently popularized in Hollywood.
