BLDGBLOG: Saddam's Palaces: An Interview with... →
UNBELIEVABLY interesting photographs and interview with BLDGBLOG and Richard Mosse - who took a post-grad grant and captured pictures of the state of many of Saddam’s 81 places throughout Iraq (many transformed into dorms for troops on the front line).
Looking forward to seeing the full book Breach soon.

Alex Asher Daniel, Selected Images
These works get my blood racing - there is something a bit Egon Scheile about them, a bit Degas, a bit Bacon. I’m in love with them.

I am uneasy with the word style, however I will say that I approach my work in certain ways. With portraiture, it is...
Walter De Maria, Earth Room (Dia)
“Does anything ever grow in there?”
“Mushrooms, sometimes,” Dilworth said. No, not Elvis; with his bushy eyebrows, Dilworth actually looked more like Tom Waits. He pushed the unruly bangs off his forehead and told me he “routinely” ate the mushrooms.
Indeed.
“Do you water it?” I asked. Yes, he rakes and waters the dirt and scrubs the walls...

Nowhere Boy (2010)
Really excited for Nowhere Boy.
Although I’m sure many people will adore it as it’s a John Lennon biopic - my primary interest is that Sam Taylor Wood is directing (!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Peter Beard (selected images)
Started looking further into the life and works of Peter Beard today after reading Cheri’s post last night at scout holiday. I want to see his Pirelli calendar for 2009 in full - it looks absolutely fantastic.
My first exposure to Beard’s work was sometime between 1993 - 1995 (I was pretty young) but I think House of Style on MTV did a feature on him (back when the show...
PHOENIX Kitsune Tabloid By Phoenix
After Digitalism, Kitsune has handed the reins of this new edition to the band Phoenix. The members of Phoenix, one of the most important French band worldwide since the success of their latest album ” It’s Never Been Like That ” have gathered a selection of tracks they’ve lived with and that have stood the test of time. To quote them : “these are little treasures that have had this huge...

Boom times make bad art??? via WSJ
KC: And this notion that booms make bad art?
DZ: One thing is for sure: The boom times, if they infiltrated the artist’s studio, it’s not a good thing. The boom shouldn’t have even made a difference in the studio. I can tell you that the activity in Marlene Dumas’ studio is exactly the same this year as it was last year – she’s still looking at a blank canvas and trying to produce a meaningful piece of art. If anything, this new era may give artists more time – maybe they’ll get a year to make a body of work instead of six months, and that time could help them create more quality. Maybe we can look again at art for its aesthetic and intellectual value and see its economic value as an afterthought. Plenty of people don’t want to hear that, but from an artist’s point of view it could be really good.

– More than just that, the criteria for applying for the fellowship program are: talent, passion for music, and a passion for music education.
A requirement of the fellowship will be to better work with the surrounding LA community to bring music to everyone.
It should be noted that two of the first...
