Boom times make bad art??? via WSJ

  • KC:And this notion that booms make bad art?
  • DZ:One thing is for sure: The boom times, if they infiltrated the artist’s studio, it’s not a good thing. The boom shouldn’t have even made a difference in the studio. I can tell you that the activity in Marlene Dumas’ studio is exactly the same this year as it was last year – she’s still looking at a blank canvas and trying to produce a meaningful piece of art. If anything, this new era may give artists more time – maybe they’ll get a year to make a body of work instead of six months, and that time could help them create more quality. Maybe we can look again at art for its aesthetic and intellectual value and see its economic value as an afterthought. Plenty of people don’t want to hear that, but from an artist’s point of view it could be really good.
