AMOROUS MUSINGS

the town

boston nostalgia set in while watching ben affleck’s “the town” last night.

after putting off seeing the movie for weeks (i had some apprehension about seeing a movie about a city i lived in for nearly 7 years, recently abandoned and the knowledge that movies always make cities look a million times better than they do in reality), i finally watched it last night.

really incredible story telling, incredible cast of characters who were on the screen from mere moments to the full length of the film and added to the richness. i am sure some of my friends who grew up in charlestown have their own idea of how their area of boston was depicted (fellas, i KNOW you have an opinion), but from my point of view — really great.

no spoilers here, but affleck does an incredible job of weaving in truly boston locations from the big and famous (fenway) to the more mundane but necessary (note picture above of date night at dunkies!!)

s. tells me that affleck is going to avoid taking boston projects from now on so he doesn’t become known as a boston director, but how can he turn his back on a city that he does such a good job articulating in moving images?

also, the AA meeting felt so legit and there was also a great layered interview effect in the early portion of the film with what seemed like the real voices of charlestown. anyone know anything about that??
