Central to Mr. Gelb’s conception of the Met’s venture was that broadcasts would be live: audiences in movie houses would vicariously experience the performance with patrons at the Met. Take away the live element and you take away a lot.
Tristan und Isolde - La Scala - Music - New York Times
Anthony Tommasini writes for the NYTimes about La Scala’s screening over the weekend of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” (a favorite of mine). For me the beauty of all of the work that has come from Tony Hall at Royal Opera House - Covent Garden (the true trailblazer of the simulcast model with BP as the sponsor) is that it makes opera more accessible. Not everyone can afford seats to live performances in the opera houses of the world - but we can all afford to go to the movies, and this takes that model to a new place.
I’m hoping Boston starts to get more screennings of live opera performances soon. We need more opera in this city badly.
