If you go off the beaten track, then you’ll always come back with a story. I’m going off the beaten track because somewhere out there is my story.

Quote from guest columnist Mark Jolly (founder and editor of globorati) over @ “The Moment” Blog for the NYTimes.

In this edition of the blog, entitled “Time-Zone Travel”, he discusses the complicated answer of asking where he lives. This resonates with me because I often stumble when answering the question of where I’m from.

For Mark the “simple” answer is that he lives in Valencia (although he quickly notes that he also lives in London and New York).

For me, I avoid at all costs mentioning where I grew up, and now the “simple” answer is to say Boston. Although when I think about the places which made and make me the person I am today; I’m “from” London, (a bit of) Malaysia, Boston, and Virginia.

I’m looking forward to adding to this list though. I love my (somewhat) nomadic existence, roots are very important but I never want to be scared of moving.
