I don’t think that Hirst’s decision to exit the gallery system is going to create a systematic breakdown of the traditional model (I think we should be more concerned about the movement towards a strictly Fair-oriented model for art buying).

Still…. I do wonder if more artists will forgo more traditional representation by galleries and pursue more “direct to appreciator” scenarios (although Sotheby’s is still acting as a middle man in these transactions).
