The Berlin Philharmonic has opened the doors to its Digital Concert Hall. At a press conference held at the orchestra’s home, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the project to allow music-lovers to ‘attend’ concerts via the internet was unveiled.

The Berlin Phil joins in on the digital move (following the Met, Royal Opera House, and others). They’re offering a pass to “attend” their entire season by tuning in online. New HD cameras installed recently will give you untold access and views. Kudos to Deutsche Bank for funding this (must have been settled before recent economic panic across all industries).

I’d worry about sound quality - but I think that access of this kind is remarkable.

Additional comments:

(1) They should have a student rate

(2) One concert a year should be free to all (obviously there are probably bandwith limitations to this - but maybe the first 2000 logins or something could get free access)

(3) Pre-concert talks should be streamable as well

(4) Thought: purchasing the pass should be considered a donation - able to be written off as a charitable contribution (obv less the real cost for each user to access the system).
