Jeanne Moreau Joins Tsai Ming-liang to Shoot a Film at the Louvre (NYT)

Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang has been using the Louvre for the set of his new film “Visages” starring Laetitia Casta…. using spaces often unopened to the public and relatively unknown.

Not familiar with his work before reading this article today - but sounds extremely interesting.

More interesting for me though is the Louvre’s openness to experimenting with new works (considering their collection and perhaps their main goal as an institution). Their consistent commitment to staying relevant and ahead of the time is exciting!

An institution the size of the Louvre taking risks like this - makes me extremely happy and inspired. I think the “wisdom” prevalent in society dictates that smaller and newer institutions should be the one taking risks (which is true), but I almost think that large and established institutions have a greater ability (funding and reputationally) to take big leaps into new fields and new areas of work. They have a great collection which will remain unchanged and so they have the knowledge that they will always have a rapt audience (one that could be captivated not only by what they’re known for but for what they can become…)
