Pianist Gould foresaw tech role in music - Los Angeles Times

Incredible article in the LAT today about a pianist who I wasn’t familiar with until 2:23 EST.

Glenn Gould, a Canadian pianist, stopped performing in 1964 in public - but he continued to release recordings until his death in the 80s.

He predicted the demise of the public recital in favor of a more personal interaction between musician and listener…. technology would allow the listener to choose specifically which artist they liked on a movement and piece together an entire composition in this nature, etc.

” He foresaw how listeners would be able to compile their own programs via technology and even alter existing performances. “Dial twiddling,” he held, is “an interpretive act.” - Michael Hiltzik

Really fascinating article.
