Silver & Light - A Documentation About The Biggest Tintype by Ian Ruhter

He created one of the biggest tintypes. His name is Ian Ruhter, the project is called Silver & Light and documents the process of making these breathtaking pictures. It’s a kinda old technique and needs in this case a hell lotta space. But it’s so great to see the struggle and passion behind this kind of projects.

“This project isn’t about making actual images, it’s not about creating the worlds largest camera it’s about doing what you love.”

Was lucky enough to help FvF with this interview with Stéphane Vacher — finally seeing the photographs really elevated it for me. There is so much nuance that comes from seeing people in spaces that they call home or led the creative vision for…. domestic curating is real.

As the Times puts it: “The night belongs to Paris” in New York theses days. We were happy to jump in on the occasion to hang out with one of the main protagonist of this movement: Stephane Vacher. Growing up in Paris, he started travelling at a very young age and even worked on a cruise ship to make a living while seeing the most exciting places worldwide. He eventually settled down in New York and started working for several Bars and Clubs before he became the director of the acclaimed discothèque “Le Bain” atop the Standard hotel.

Scott2012.org is SO serious.

Incredibly inspirational and as close to the epic-ness of the lunar landing that I will be able to experience in my life so far….

I am so happy that there are areas of the world and feats of humans that are beyond the reach of tourism packages & large bank accounts — and that we can also experience a bit of the magic that these 3 men are preparing for, even if only through their documentation.

I first encountered Kiki Smith’s works at the MFA in Boston in the days preceding my first year of college. There is an incredible bronze statue that is part of their permanent collection there — a woman crouched down in an inquisitive, animal-like pose — but she is mounted on the wall. A real predator.

At the time I didn’t know who Kiki Smith was or what her work would come to mean to me in the following years.

Flash forward to 2005, the Whitney mounts a beautiful Smith exhibition — and I “chinatown bus” it to NY with the ultimate art history professor to see it. Being able to see so much of her work in one location, the various mediums, subject matters, histories. A woman showing women as sacrificial yet powerful, maternal and predatory, mere slips of paper and then weighty bronze forms. What was not to love?

A book of her work was one of the few art books (aka HEAVY books) that I brought with me when I made my transatlantic move.

In late December I started a new fitness regime, it goes by the name CrossFit and I haven’t had so much fun working out in a LONG TIME. I also haven’t been so sore post-workout in a long time, but I like that too honestly.

Obviously starting a new routine means obsessively watching videos of people doing it on YouTube. For me, the main channel I’ve been “tuning in to” is Blair Morrison’s.

In addition to placing well the past few years at the CrossFit games, this guy takes his workouts outside the box & shows us how it doesn’t take a gym to get a workout in — or to find a new degree of strength.

Moving House

As you may have gathered, I had a semi-nomadic childhood. We typically moved at least every two years and spent most summers abroad in some combination of Malaysia or China. And before we ask, we are not a military family at all. (Have I written this before? I think so. HA!)

This is all to say that at the moment I am the midst of moving house yet again — but this time it is just about 4 big NYC blocks from my current location in Geneva.

I love almost everything that comes with moving into a new place — organizing, throwing out things that no longer have a use, donating clothing that I no longer need, etc. (Things I don’t love: physically carrying a small elephant’s weight in books and magazines).

Our new place is nearly 3 times the size of our current place too — and I am SO looking forward to having empty spaces around me. In all things I think it is necessary to have a place where not only you can rest, but where your eyes can rest as well. Empty spaces give you a sense of breathing — and we could all use some more of that.

Our new place also has a large dining room, so for those of you either in the Geneva area or visiting the Geneva area, an open invitation for dinner at my new place.
